To Outsource Email or Not

Silicon.com contributor Will Sturgeon quotes CIOs and vendors in Europe on the topic of outsourcing email security in “CIOs asking if it’s time to outsource security.” He writes, “the industry is pulling in two very different directions.”

Some companies “want to just turn on a tap and have it come through. They don't really care who cleans the water or how, as long as they are doing it well,” Mr. Sturgeon paraphrases one vendor as saying. Other companies see email as their primary method of communication and don’t want to give up control on that, says another vendor.

The key to succeeding in outsourcing email service, according to the story, is to maintain control of policies. Not an entirely satisfying answer, since it doesn’t specify what policies or how to retain control.
