UK-based Barclay Bank sourcing executive special programmes, Mark Varley, offered some useful advice to attendees at a Gartner summit on outsourcing last week.

As this Computer Weekly article reports, Mr. Varley warned client firms to beware the terms of their software licensing to prevent unwarranted surprises, a topic covered in the past on Sourcingmag.com. Barclay overcomes that particular issue by choosing, “right-to-use contracts for software,” even though that means the burden is on the client, not the service provider.

Likewise, Mr. Varley encouraged delegates to "be prepared to resist unwarranted additional usage charges.”

Another tip, which I haven’t thought of before: “Do not assume that the supplier's bid and delivery team buy into each other's solutions; continually test the supplier's internal alignment as much as your own.”
