GM and CMMI

A friend pointed out to me after reading my Capgemini article that I should have asked Joe Kovach what he knew about GM’s plans with the Software Engineering Institute. Say what? (Dang. Hate it when that happens.)

According to this November 2005 press release, General Motors and Carnegie Mellon’s SEI are jointly developing a new business process improvement model for companies looking to outsource IT capabilities to third-party suppliers.

This joint effort makes a lot of sense since GM has put a great deal of energy and time into the development of standards for 44 "core processes." Working with SEI means these standards will become something other companies can adopt so that each one doesn’t reinvent those wheels driving basic IT.

The press release said an initial draft was expected in Dec. 2005 and an initial model for public release will be published by the end of 1Q06. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for it.
