The BPO sector has been great for India, employing over 400,000 people and bringing in revenue of over $6 billion. And this growth continues at a healthy 35%-40% a year. But India largely caters to the English-speaking markets. Evalueserve estimates that the non- English opportunity will be $14.4 billion by 2010. While the IT industry will cater to nearly 50% of this demand, the BPO and KPO segments are expected to account for the remaining 50%. Evalueserve estimates that the Indian offshoring industry will require 160,000 foreign-language professionals by 2010, in order to address the potential offshore market for language-sensitive work. According to estimates, not more than 40,000 Indians with foreign language specialization will qualify to meet this requirement, thereby creating a supply-side constraint. India will need to source around 120,000 international multi- lingual professionals by 2010 to meet this demand.
