Money Magazine has run a short news item reporting on HP’s decision to consolidate 85 data centers located worldwide into six large facilities in the US. The company’s goal: To save $1 billion in coming years.

The new facilities will be located in Atlanta, Houston and Austin. Each city will host two facilities. Savings will derive from — of all places — utility cost reductions. The sites were chosen, according to the article, "based on the costs of the space, the available power and network connections, as well as lower vulnerability to natural disasters."
