The Outsourcing of Archive Storage

Osterman Research recently published new survey results saying that 87% of respondents “feel that data security is a significant concern when considering outsourced service providers,” according to coverage on DMReview.com. More than half of respondents said they’re not outsourcing archiving requirements “due to concerns around third party access to data.”

The article goes on to say that “many experts now recommend encryption as the best protection against risk of a security breach.”

How would this work for archived content — such as backup media with sensitive data? One company — Fortiva — provides an appliance called FortivaARCHIVE, “to ensure all data is encrypted before leaving the customer’s firewall.” It remains encrypted during transit and in storage, which means the service provider — while protecting the bits and bytes you’ve sent them — can’t access the content.
